Family subplots = Nausea
Watch almost any film and they will always throw in a family subplot or a
romance subplot when none is needed. Bruce Willis in every film always has
trouble at home. Every cop has a broken marriage and a drinking problem.
The hero always ends up with the girl, etc. Face-Off probably had the most
sickening subplot with John Travolta and his face touching and general
family bonding. A family is not the only motivation in life!
On a positive note, The Fugitive was excellent for a Hollywood film,
because there was no romantic subplot. The wife was killed at the start of
the film, and Harrison Ford does not find anyone else. I was pleasantly
surprised by that plot. So often the hero loses someone at the start of the
film, only to find someone else within the next ninety minutes. Ugh!
