You ain't seen seedy til you seen the Valley
I grew up frequenting venues in Fortitude Valley in Brisbane, before the
Fitzgerald Inquiry exposed police corruption and made the public aware of
the illegal activities that were happening. I've been to clubs and venues
that had illegal gambling casinos, strip clubs or brothels upstairs, I've
seen police taking bribes (money and girls), I've seen guns and baseball
bats pulled on people, seen gambling equipment blatantly being carried down
the street, drug deals and prostitution in the open, drug taking and sex in
the streets, and generally just slimey men making a living. The Valley was
like a Martin Scorcese movie and I often felt I was an extra in Mean
Streets, which is something Joel Schumacher can't seem to portray.
Look at Schumacher's resume for evidence of his limitations. Given the films he
generally makes, is he really the best director to make a seedy, gritty
drama? No!
