Kindle. More mid-century hardboiled pulp noir. Short punchy sentences. Third person. Little humour. The action starts in Chicago but doesn't loiter. The author implies that the University of Chicago is close to Division (where I used to live) but it isn't. Riding the rails, like Scarecrow (1973) to some small-town shenanigans in Ohio, near the border with Michigan, where all the ladies would be rich if only someone let them. (This jag made little sense as the protagonist claimed to be aiming for Mexico.) The main thread is essentially Lolita (1955). It is emphasised that the bloke's cognition is failing due to lust and a lack of sustenance which is just to say that the plot got weaker. The mystery parts mostly consisted of withheld information that is not very imaginative. I couldn't believe this guy was the brains behind the prison break at Joliet.
Goodreads. Apparently (re-)published alongside Chaze's Black Wings Has My Angel (1953).
