The latest from Aardman Animations and as such inevitable. As referential as the previous instalments (Shaun the Sheep (2015), Farmaggedon (2019)) but this one is insufficiently inventive on its own account and is far from their best work. The Halloween theme and tropes seem explicitly targeted at a US audience with insufficient English quirk. Shaun plays a mad scientist (ala Wallace or Gene Wilder in Young Frankenstein (1974)) but the other sheep prove just as capable when they get their chance (ala Gromit). The plot has a lot of dead time as the inevitable confusions get resolved in the correct order.
Peter Bradshaw: four stars.
